One Room Challenge | The Grand Reveal – Hidden Guest Room

The  2020 Spring One Room Challenge grand reveal deadline came and went. In my true delayed fashion, I am way off schedule! For those of you who haven’t been following along, I have taken on our guest room and have brought it to its full potential by hiding it inside of a home office. I have built or refinished EVERYTHING in this room to get here and it has been a hard ride! Catch up with what’s been going on below:

The Road to the Guest Room Reveal

I won’t lie, it has not been easy to get to this point. Everything seemed to take so much longer than I expected it to, plus I had a chicken coop to build in the middle of everything. There were quite a few bumps in the road, but friends… MY GOD WE’VE MADE IT.

Before I get to those juicy reveal photos, though, let’s take a quick look at where we started.

What We’ve Done

• Replace the floors
• Build the Murphy bed
• Finish painting the Murphy bed
• Build the built-in cabinets 
• Paint the cabinets <- week 4 (guess I’m running behind, what’s new?)
• Decide on what color to paint the walls 
• Paint the walls <- week 5
• Replace the baseboards <- week 5
• Add crown moulding <- week 5
• Stalk FB Marketplace for cowhide rugs, thrifted finds, etc. <- constant
• Sell the existing dresser
• Replace the dresser with something low and long
• Find a painting for above the bed
• Omg buy a mattress… 
• Buy bedding
• Decorate
• Pictures
• Reveal!
  Newly Added:
• Paint all crown and baseboards – ???
• Build waterfall live edge desk
• Refinish credenza
• Buy lamps
• Exchange ceiling fan

This was a huge undertaking, but I was able to create a two-in-one type of room that was both functional and stylish.

The After – Home Office Portion

The true finishing touches were the baseboard and crown moulding provided by Ornamental Moulding and Millwork – they adorn the top of the built-in shelving unit and really help to finish the room. Without these finishing touches, this room would just look naked.

This waterfall live edge desk was a first for me! I traveled to a local mesquite lumberyard about six miles from where I live – Faifer & Company. They have an amazing selection of mesquite and pecan live edge slabs, lumber and other milled wood – a true dream for a woodworker!

This mid-century modern pillow by Deborah Main at The Pillow Goddess is the perfect accent to this room – I am always so impressed by her designs!

This artwork and the antique brick mold were both found at a unique shop in Comfort, Texas – Shopping With Siobhain.

The After – Hidden Guest Room

The guest room actually hides inside of the built-in shelving that serves as the backdrop of the office.

Meanwhile, the old office chair hides in the corner of the guest room.

Ornamental Moulding and Millwork with the incredible baseboards and crown moulding really helped pull this room together. Without trim, a room is just naked – their quality craftsmanship and superior product led to some of the most beautiful trim I have in my entire house.
