It’s one of my favorite/most stressful time of year – time for the Spring One Room Challenge kickoff!

This week finally marks the start of the One Room Challenge for the spring of 2020. With all of the insanity that is going on in the world right now, they (rightfully so) postponed it about a month out from the original start date. There is a lot of uncertainty surrounding so many things right now – and this challenge is not immune to that!

If you are new to this One Room Challenge thing – here is a little bit about it. Each spring and fall, several designers and DIY-ers from all over choose one room to completely overhaul over the course of (usually) six weeks.

Last spring was my very first time participating and I completely gutted our daughter’s nursery, transforming it into an adventurous big girl room! In the fall, I tackled our master bedroom – taking it from dim and uninspiring to a French Country retreat.

Nursery Before: Gross carpet, storage issues and still had a crib.
After: I replaced the flooring, baseboards, painted the walls, built the cabin bed and refinished her dresser for this round!
Master Bedroom Before: Same gross carpet – this shot shows when I chose to replace the flooring.
After: So comfortable she only lasted one minute! You can see some of my projects here – the upholstered chair, the scrap wood storage bed, the painted furniture, the hand scraped acacia flooring and the vintage windows.

This Round’s Room

For this round, I have decided to go with my original pick for the fall One Room Challenge – our guest bedroom! This room has been an actual bedroom only a handful of times while we’ve lived here. Other times, it has mostly served as the junk room and revolving project room.

Here are some great before pictures to give you an idea of what I’m working with here:

This room is the black hole of the house – it collects everything!
I still have the knobs on from when we bought the house – it was a little boy’s room.
Terribly dated ceiling fans.
Also, I changed out the flooring but never finished the baseboards!

The Plan

Now, working mostly from home, I have definitely felt the need for my own office space. Secretly, I also need a place to escape when my husband is snoring at night! So, my goal is to transform it into a combination room – a home office with a surprise guest bedroom hiding inside of it!

And yes, I will be building everything! (Of course!)

My plans for this room, as per most of my room transformations, have started with a general idea of what I’m going for, but absolutely no plan – more of a general outline. I do, however, have some plans downloaded (that I’m going to modify) for the furniture I’m going to attempt to build. My first round of projects start this week – a huge set of built-ins with a sneaky murphy bed inside!
