Welcome to Breaking Down the Box!

Thank you so much for stopping by Breaking Down the Box!

I’m Michelle and I am a single mom living in Maryland with my little girl, my identical twin boys and our Golden Retriever, Lola. Growing up, my dad taught me a lot about using power tools, renovations and overall confidence around DIY projects. I grew to really love working with my hands!

As I got into my career and started to feel the weight of the real world, I did less and less DIY work – family, responsibilities and the 9-5 drew all of my energy. One day, I guess the stress of it all caught up to me.

I was diagnosed with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), a heart condition which causes my heart to jump around from really low to really high, after my daughter was born. Along with some scary symptoms, it caused me to really take a look at what my life was. What followed were a few years of really tumultuous personal life events, a career change and ultimately, a transition back into single life. To help keep myself out of my own head, I turned to DIY time and time again to remind myself that I can build a life I am proud to call my own. I turned to DIY to remind myself that I am strong, capable and can do hard things.

I love sharing my projects with you all and hope you can gather up your own confidence in exploring projects of your own! Through mistakes and willingness to just try, let’s make our homes and lives beautiful one project at a time!
