We just hit the halfway mark in the  2020 Spring One Room Challenge For those of you who haven’t been following along, I am taking on our guest room and bringing it to its full potential by hiding it inside of a home office. As we turn the corner for the home stretch, I am shifting gears away from coops and back to building the remaining built-in shelves.

To catch up on where we’ve been already for the guest room, check out the links below:

Picking Back Up With the Home Office

So, while I did start on this room prior to the One Room Challenge actually starting, I ended up taking a huge detour for the first official three weeks. I built a huge chicken mansion instead.

Needless to say, I may be slightly behind. Just like all of my blog posts it seems…

But I shifted gears this week and started to spin myself back up (mentally) for getting back into the guest room. There are a million things left to do and I feel mentally stalled for some reason. I did, however force myself to get the built-in shelving bulk build completed.

Starting the Build

The build itself was pretty straight forward and I actually could whip one of these out in a single afternoon. The first step was to get the measurements down for the width of these cabinets. From my experience with the Murphy bed, I knew I wanted these to be just a tad bit shorter so that I could build them completely and then lift them into the upright position without taking down my ceiling.

I ripped all of my boards ahead of time with my Kreg Rip-Cut. If you haven’t tried this tool out it is a GAME CHANGER. I don’t need a table saw in most cases and it is very portable – it’s been amazing! The second step was to pre-drill multiple pocket holes for the assembly. Kreg came in clutch yet again.

Assembly was done in the room itself because these were just incredibly huge. I could never have moved these safely through the house without gouging some walls or taking out my toddler!

The Hidden Challenge

Picture this – you have just assembled a huge piece of furniture based off of measurements you took of the openings. You are excited and call your husband in to help you lift it into place. The bottom slides in like butter. The top? Nearly 3/4″ off – like real off.

Surprise! Your walls are warped. So, it took me two rounds of disassembling and then shaving quarter inches off of the top piece so that we could finally just barely get it in place. But when that moment came… it was glorious.

At the top, I plan to finish these off with some gorgeous crown moulding, which will actually be the topic of next week’s post – I have a FANTASTIC partner to share with you and I think you will really be impressed by the quality of their millwork.

The left side went so much smoother! Other than having to completely reassemble it as well due to forgetting to cut the length off the sides…. what can you do?

So now that those two are up, I can start fleshing them out with the drawers and adjustable shelves and set myself up for some stunning moulding. Did anyone say ASPEN?

I will. Next week – see you there!

What’s Left

Now, I can really focus in on my plan:

  • Replace the floors
  • Build the Murphy bed
  • Finish painting the Murphy bed
  • Build the built-in cabinets
  • Paint the cabinets <- week 4 (guess I’m running behind, what’s new?)
  • Decide on what color to paint the walls
  • Paint the walls <- week 5
  • Replace the baseboards <- week 5
  • Add crown moulding <- week 5
  • Stalk FB Marketplace for cowhide rugs, thrifted finds, etc. <- constant
  • Sell the existing dresser
  • Replace the dresser with something low and long
  • Find a painting for above the bed
  • Omg buy a mattress… <– I did this yay! Now, I can sleep somewhere without snoring if I need to!
  • Buy bedding
  • Decorate
  • Take a million pictures
  • Reveal day!

I hope you will join me with the rest of this adventure, because I for sure will need some support. Motivation levels have been dropping off this week for some reason or another, but I’ll still be showing up over on Instagram.

Wish me luck!!
