How are we just two weeks away from the  2020 Spring One Room Challenge reveal?? If it’s any indication of how crazy this past few weeks has been, it is just a few hours before the deadline for ORC posting, and I am just now writing this blog. For those of you who haven’t been following along, I am taking on our guest room and bringing it to its full potential by hiding it inside of a home office. With week five’s post being canceled to honor and support the victims of social injustice, these last two weeks are going to be something else. In the next few weeks I have quite the to-do list. Stay tuned to see if I can make the reveal deadline on June 25th (with my chronic late posting, you probably could guess the answer).

Week 1 | Week 2 | Week 3 | Week 4 | Week 5 – canceled to stand with an important movement | Week 6

Everything is Not OK

The past two weeks have been, lightly put, extremely heavy. Week 5 of the One Room Challenge was put on hold as our nation turned their eyes to George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter movement. It has been a time of great sadness, for all involved. However, I also saw some incredibly positive things come from the darkness.

The focus on our room transformations has felt so unimportant compared to what is happening in our nation. The drive to keep forging ahead has been tough to find. I realized, though, that what I do in my own home – to educate myself and my children, to teach love and acceptance, to embrace diversity across so many levels – that is what my biggest impact can be. I thank all of you for hanging around during a time that was, for most, one of the toughest weeks in a long time.

These past two weeks have also opened my eyes to the inequity that I see across my Instagram and blogging feed, in general! It has led me to seek out multiple shops owned by black designers and identify key pieces for my reveal.

As the deadline grows ever closer, though, my eyes are simultaneously opening to the very real possibility of me not finishing on time. Week 5, while the world seemed on pause, I painted the entire room and finished the built-in shelving build. I also got a mattress (yay for a snoring escape)!

I made some shelves.
Presidential White Week 6
I went with the color “Presidential White” after painting a few swatches on the wall.

Week 6 Action – Baseboards and Crown

Guest Bedroom Baseboards

The best part of week 6 was diving straight into the baseboards and crown moulding! After perusing the big box stores for my crown and baseboard options, I was introduced to Ornamental Moulding and Millworks and, let’s say, I just didn’t look back. They have such a stunning collection of millwork and decorative moulding, I had a hard time settling on what I wanted for this room. Ultimately, I opted for a traditional style profile to fit with the overall feel of my home. I plan to dress it up even further with quarter round across the base, but the baseboard and crown moulding profiles are the true show stoppers here. Made of Aspen, they are 5 1/2″ wide (baseboard) and 4 1/2″ wide (crown). Honestly, my husband doesn’t even want me to paint them because they are so beautiful straight from the box.

Next week, I plan to give you a full rundown on the installation and a little bit more about Ornamental’s offerings (hint: it’s not just baseboards and crown)!

Started Obsessing About Facebook Marketplace

While I started thinking about the other things I’ll need in this room prior to this past week, it’s like I just woke up and suddenly the deadline is practically here! I have really been sucked into my phone lately – my husband gripes that I’m not paying attention to whatever we are watching on TV in the evenings… I start my mornings with Marketplace… I end my days with Marketplace…

You get the picture.

Anyway, I have started sourcing the rest of my pieces which include:

  • Credenza
  • Accent and Office Chairs
  • Decor Items
  • Rugs
  • Lamps

I ended up finding a fantastic deal on an industrial, steel credenza which I plan to dress up in the limited number of hours I have left in this challenge. The one item that is seriously boggling my mind is the chair. I can’t find what I’m looking for to save my life.

So, you’ll just find me glued to my phone for the next two weeks while I try to wrap up the below items in a mad frenzied dash to the finish line.

Another fantastic Facebook Marketplace find – a Brazilian cowhide!

What’s Left

I probably have much more than this left, but I’m too scatterbrained to know it.

  • Replace the floors
  • Build the Murphy bed
  • Finish painting the Murphy bed
  • Build the built-in cabinets
  • Paint the cabinets <- week 4 (guess I’m running behind, what’s new?)
  • Decide on what color to paint the walls
  • Paint the walls <- week 5
  • Replace the baseboards <- week 5
  • Add crown moulding <- week 5
  • Stalk FB Marketplace for cowhide rugs, thrifted finds, etc. <- constant
  • Sell the existing dresser
  • Replace the dresser with something low and long
  • Find a painting for above the bed
  • Omg buy a mattress… <– I did this yay! Now, I can sleep somewhere without snoring if I need to!
  • Buy bedding
  • Decorate
  • Pictures
  • Reveal!
    Newly Added:
  • Paint all crown and baseboards – ???
  • Build waterfall live edge desk
  • Refinish credenza
  • Buy lamps
  • Exchange ceiling fan

How am I supposed to ever finish if I keep adding things to my list! I hope you join me next week as I give you a bit more background on Ornamental Moulding and Millworks – the source of the incredible baseboards and crown you have seen me putting up over on Instagram.
